Special steam tour to Chesterfield via Marston Vale Line coming this June!

This June, steam locomotive 61306 Mayflower will set out from London and make a rare journey along the Marston Vale line, stopping at the beautifully restored station of Ridgmont, on its way to the Peak District.

On Thursday 9th June, the tour will start out, steam-hauled, from Ealing Broadway in the morning and will make its way along the West Coast Main Line before joining the rarely-used Marston Vale Line to Bedford, stopping at Bletchley and Ridgmont to pick up passengers along the way. Ridgmont railway station is described as a ‘hidden gem’ with the station building built in the distinctive Victorian Gothic ‘Cottage Orné’ style. Mayflower will then join the Midland Main Line to reach Derbyshire, where passengers have the option to join different excursions in the Peak District.

The former Ridgmont Station House is built in the distinctive Victorian Gothic ‘Cottage Orné’ style,

David Buck, Chairman of Steam Dreams and owner of steam locomotive Mayflower, commented “We are delighted our trip coincides with the special 175th anniversary celebrations. Mayflower has not hauled this route in recent history, and to experience the locomotive over this beautiful line will be a magnificent sight.” Buck added “it is always really exciting to bring a steam train to a new route and is made even more pertinent by the fact that steam-powered travel was one of the main modes of transport 175 years ago. The interest and enthusiasm from passengers to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train is wonderful.”

Transport Team Leader (Rail) at the Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership, Stephen Sleight, is delighted that Mayflower will be making a visit: “We are currently celebrating the 175th anniversary year of the Line and are very pleased to welcome a rare steam special. He added “Our wonderful Friends of Ridgmont Station volunteers will be on hand to welcome visitors to Ridgmont Station Heritage Centre, where I’m sure there will be an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation for Mayflower’s arrival.”

Tickets for the trip to Chesterfield range from £109 in Premium Standard through to the top class of Pullman Style Dining from £274. Passengers travelling in Pullman Style Dining will be served a Champagne Breakfast on the outward journey, and a two course lunch on the return, whilst those opting for Premium Standard will be served complimentary tea and coffee at their seats.

All passengers will have the opportunity to visit some of the Peak District’s finest attractions including the National Tramway Museum at Crich, which contains over 60 trams, Chatsworth House, a magnificent English country house with beautiful formal gardens, Barrow Hill Roundhouse or the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, Derbyshire’s longest heritage railway.
