Join us on a winter wonderland tour of Bavaria as we travel to Germany to enjoy this most festive of trips.
The centrepiece of the tour will be 3 nights in Nuremburg, rated the best Christmas Market in Germany by The Daily Telegraph. The medieval city centre is easy to get around and is hosting several markets from the end of November.
Monday 30 November – Thursday 3 December 2020

- 3 nights in Nuremburg

Optional Day – Sunday 29th November – London St Pancras to Frankfurt
Leaving London after breakfast we will be whisked across the Channel in no time at all and in around two hours be in the Belgian capital of Brussels where we will change trains to one of the European high speed trains. Within an hour we will be heading, again at high speed, across the border into Germany and streaking through the countryside to the city of Frankfurt. We aim to have everybody settled in to their hotels comfortably before dinner.
Day 1 – Monday 30th November – Frankfurt to Nuremberg by Steam
Before we set off by steam to Nuremberg mid-morning there will be time explore the city. Our 23058 Class 23 steam locomotive and vintage carriages will be awaiting passengers at Frankfurt Main Station.
Soon we will be steaming out of the city and heading south-eastwards towards the valleys, rolling hills and mountains of Bavaria enjoying a leisurely run along the byways of the extensive German network.
Much of the scenery en route to Nuremberg is pleasantly rural and if there has been any cold weather there will no doubt be some snowy peaks to bring an early feel of Christmas. On board, the Steam Dreams team will be ensure that passengers have everything they need. Of course it wouldn’t be a Christmas trip to Bavaria without gluhwein and passengers in all classes will be offered a complimentary glass as we steam along. We arrive in Nuremberg late afternoon to our centrally located hotels all within walking distance of the medieval walls of the city and the many vibrant market.
Day 2: Tuesday 1st December Visit Nuremberg and enjoy a short day trip to Regensburg by steam
Nuremberg’s name conjures up many memories of post war history as it was the infamous location of the post war trials. Many of the optional excursions we will be doing today and the following day will give passengers the opportunity to learn all about this city’s fascinating history and of course visit the many markets that are scattered around the city centre.
However, included in the main tour is a short day trip and we will be setting out steam hauled around midday to the beautiful medieval Cathedral City of Regensburg, a Unesco World Heritage site which nestles on the River Danube. The outward journey of about 75 miles will take the steeply graded route out of Nuremberg hauled by a powerful Freight locomotive and with little other traffic on the route we are planning to allow passengers to leave the train to watch our loco run past in full cry before re-joining the train for the rest of the outward journey. On arrival in picturesque Regensburg we have three hours to explore this delightful city with its many markets and historical buildings before returning to our hotels for dinner.
Day 3 – Wednesday 2nd December – Exploring Nuremberg or an Austrian Adventure to Salzburg
For many this will be the day they spend exploring the city and its many adventures, but for those who are indefatigable in their desire for new places and new railway journeys there will be the opportunity of travelling to Salzburg by express train. Steam Dreams will be organising a one day excursion by high speed service train to the wonderful Austrian city of Salzburg which nestles at the foot of the Northern Alps and on the banks of the River Salza. Obviously not technically a Bavarian city but it does have many of the same charms, beautiful historic buildings, narrow cobbled streets, plenty of market activity and of course the wonderful Salzburg Cathedral and Castle whose sonorous bells’ chimes echo round the city and the surrounding hills truly bringing the hills alive with the sound of music!
Day 4 – Thursday 3rd December – Nuremberg to Mainz and Cologne by steam and vintage electric
We will be leaving shortly after breakfast in our hotels and once again steam is to the fore as we head back towards Frankfurt via a different route through the valleys and hills of the surrounding region. Passengers who are going to Frankfurt for a quicker journey back to London will leave us at Mainz for the short trip by service train, escorted by Steam Dreams.
In Mainz we will be swapping steam for the oldest electric loco ever to haul one of our Holidays – built in 1940 it will certainly cause as much as a stir as we pass through villages and towns as our steam loco will have done earlier. By early evening we will be arriving in Cologne with spectacular views of the Cathedral as we head across the River Rhine into the Main Station which is literally at the foot of the Cathedral steps. Cologne is a truly wonderful cosmopolitan city and the perfect place to end the holiday. At this time of year it is alive with not just markets but many wonderful attractions, most in the surrounds of the Cathedral and alongside the river.
Optional Day – Friday 4th December – Cologne to London St Pancras
There will be time to have a leisurely breakfast in our hotels and even a look around the city centre before we set off at midday on our high speed train to Brussels where we change onto the Eurostar for a late afternoon arrival at London St Pancras.
